Do Diet Foods Work?

We see a lot of packaged diet foods on the shelf these days. These may be promoted as Lite, Diet, low carb, low calorie, or low fat foods. But since the US has a big obesity problem, and since we Americans buy a lot of diet foods, one has to question these packaged foods.

What are Real Diet Foods?

High water content foods provide satisfaction without adding a lot of calories. They also tend to provide healthy vitamins and minerals. Almost all vegetables and fruits make good choices. They help us feel satisfied without adding a lot of calories.

Take Meat on the Side

We are not asking you to start eating like your pet bunny either! We are just asking you to try changing the way you approach your meals. We tend to take a lot of meat and bread, and then put a little salad or veggies on our plate. Instead, pile your plate high with salad and green beans. Then add a small portion of bread and protein.

Fruit is Nature's Wonder Food

Almost everybody likes fruit. It is probably programmed in our genes. You would have to eat a lot of handfuls of sweet grapes to equal the calorie content of one small candy bar. Those grapes will also give your body vitamins and minerals, and will help you feel satisfied.

Chocolate as Diet Food

If you should not eat a lot of chocolate while dieting, you can certainly enjoy chocolate drinks! Try low fat chocolate milk or hot chcolate. This is great. For a few calories you can satisfy a chocolate craving, and you can take in protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Try Negative Calorie Foods

Do not give up on your favorite foods. Just add some diced up veggies to your family pasta sauce. A cup of diced onions, peppers, zuchinni will add bulk. The same portion of food will cost your calorie budget a lot less.

You can also find some types of food that are so full of fiber they have a negative calorie impact. Japanese konnyaku noodles are one good example.

Can You Still Dine Out?

Go ahead an enjoy your favorite restaurant. Just be sure to start with a salad and replace some starch or protein with a vegetable. This will help you cut some calories while still allowing you to eat a good sized serving of food!
