Exactly Who Is To Blame For Obesity?

By Trevor Johnson

Many people in America are obese. It is easy to look down upon people who are overweight. It is one of the most picked on class of people in America. Who is to blame for obesity is the question. You may jump to the person and part of that is true. But looking at many of the underlying issues of a person's weight gain can help us understand the 'why' to a person's issues with weight.

Depression: If you are not feeling well mentally you can over eat. You don't want to feel good about yourself and you will feed the need to feel better by eating. It gives you a sense of goodness for the period you are eating it because it tastes good.

Control: When everything else is a person's life is out of control then perhaps the one thing they can control is eating. Even if it is too much they are in control and want to have control over something. It can cause obesity. It can also cause other eating disorders as bulimia.

Learned behavior: If you come from a family where a big bowl of ice cream is the norm before you go to bed and most of your family is overweight it is a learned behavior. It is nobody's 'fault' per say it is just how your family has learned to eat on a regular basis.

Protection: Many people who have been sexually abused cover up their bodies by gaining weight. There is the feeling that if they are not attractive then they cannot be hurt sexually again. It is their protection and safety net from pain.

It is easy to blame obesity on various factors but knowing the source of issues that are the core of the 'why' you can begin to work on those issues. If you can find these sources then it will help you why you go for certain behavioral patterns to over eat. If you have a desire to lose weight these issues may present themselves later and you can deal with them. Just don't give up and strive for a better life and feel good about yourself. - 33373
